 Frequently Asked Questions Minimize

Do I need to have kayaking or climbing experience?

Absolutely not! You need not have every stepped foot in a kayak or climbed a hill to take part in First Descents’ programs.

I’m out of shape can I still attend?

Of course, you’re body has been through a lot and we don’t have any requirements for fitness. We’ll push you but we won’t push you past your capabilities.

What do I need to bring?

Basically you’ll be bringing just what you would if you went on any trip. Toiletries, lots of t-shirts, shorts, warm sweaters for nighttime, a hat or two, undergarments etc. Also a sleeping bag, if you have one, might be a good idea, we sleep indoors and sheets are usually provided but a sleeping bag could never hurt. If you have any specific questions about something you might want to bring with you, just call the office and we’ll do our best to answer your questions.

What if I don’t have any kayaking or climbing equipment whatsoever?

Not a problem, First Descents provides all the necessary equipment to keep you warm, safe and relatively dry.

Why do you only serve 18-39 year olds?

This population is the most underserved in the cancer world and it is our mission to provide much need programs to this demographic. While we would like to provide First Descents to everyone, it’s not financially or physically possible to do so.

What if I have trouble paying for my travel to and from the First Descents’ location?

First Descents provides travel scholarships for those who demonstrate financial need, the organization makes every effort to not let monetary obstacles prevent someone from participating.

Is there medical support?

Yes, we have a volunteer medical staff that is on every trip and program First Descents has. First Descents also has a medical director, Dr. Marc Slatkoff, a retired medical oncologist of thirty years who reviews all applications and is in communication with each participant’s primary care physicians.

What if I sign up and end up not being able to participate due to medical reasons?

First Descents understands that circumstances may change over the course of several months and we will make every effort to have you participate when you are cleared by your doctor.

What if I’m currently on treatment?

As long as Dr. Marc and your medical team feels it’s safe for you to attend and take part, then we’re all for it! We have participants in all stages of treatment and recovery, recent amputees, those with special medical needs etc. We’re very good at adapting to your specific needs.

Am I safe on the water?

While whitewater kayaking and mountain climbing are not “Disney Rides”, safety is absolutely our first priority. We have the best guides and safety support  on the planet and never go beyond a 4:1 ratio of participants to guides, if needed we’ll go 1:1 and have many times in the past.

What happens when we’re not on the water or on a mountain?

First Descents is all about having fun, relaxing and getting to know one another. We play volleyball, take hikes, sit and chat, listen to music, eat and do a whole lot of laughing.

Are the any fees associated with taking part in the First Descents programs?

First Descents is free to all of those who are accepted into the program.

What about paperwork?

It is essential that the entire First Descents application, including all medical forms, are submitted in a timely manner. We can’t accept anyone who does not have a completed file before the start of programs.
